Rebranding without the risk: when to refresh your brand identity

Rebranding without the risk: when to refresh your brand identity

The logo from your first day in business does not have to fit the company you are today. We explain how to tell it is time for a change - and how to make it without losing recognition.

Your logo, colours and communication style are what customers associate with your company. Over time, though, the business grows, changes its offer and its customers, and the identity no longer keeps up. That is when the question of rebranding comes up. We explain when it is worth refreshing a brand, when it is better to wait - and how to carry out the change without losing what you have already built.

Rebrand or refresh?

They are not the same. A refresh modernises the existing identity: refining the logo, organising colours and typography, new photos. The brand stays recognisable. A rebrand is a deeper change: a new name or logo, a different positioning, a new promise to customers. A refresh is usually enough - a full rebrand only makes sense when the company has genuinely changed.

When is it worth refreshing a brand?

  • the logo looks poor at small sizes, on a phone or on social media
  • every material looks different because there are no brand guidelines
  • the company has expanded its offer, but the identity is tied to the old scope
  • you are targeting a new, more demanding customer group
  • competitors look more modern and therefore seem more professional
  • you are entering foreign markets

When is it better to wait?

  • when the only reason is being bored with your own logo - customers see it far less often than you do
  • when the brand is well recognised and has good associations
  • when the problem is not the look but the offer, the service or the website

How to rebrand without the risk

1. Start with strategy

Before a new logo is created, define who the brand is for, what sets it apart and how it should be perceived. A design without a strategy is just a change of decoration.

2. Keep what works

A recognisable colour, a distinctive element of the mark or a name customers remember are assets. A good rebrand builds on them instead of throwing them away.

3. Build a system, not just a logo

Colours, typography, photo style, icons and communication rules, collected in brand guidelines. That way every material - the website, social media, a leaflet - looks consistent. This is how we work in our logo and branding service.

4. Plan the roll-out

A list of places to update: the website, social profiles, Google Business Profile, documents, signage, packaging. It is best to introduce the changes at one announced moment.

5. Tell your customers

A short note about what is changing and why helps customers accept the new look and builds interest in the brand.

Your website after a rebrand

A new identity is often a good moment for a new website - consistent with the brand, fast and matched to the current offer. If page addresses change along the way, redirects are needed so you do not lose your Google rankings. We run such projects as part of website design.

An example from our work

We prepared a consistent packaging design for a product line for, among others, the MARTIUS brand.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a rebrand cost?

It depends on the scope: refreshing the logo and basic guidelines is a different project from a full identity system rolled out to every material. We will agree the scope and cost in a quote.

How long does an identity project take?

Usually from a few to a dozen or so weeks, depending on the number of materials and approval rounds.

Will I lose customers after a rebrand?

Not if the change is well thought through, keeps the recognisable elements and is communicated well.
