Local SEO: how to rank higher on Google Maps in your city

Local SEO: how to rank higher on Google Maps in your city

A Google Maps listing is often a customer's first contact with a local business. We show how to complete it and how to support it with your website to appear higher.

When someone searches Google for "hairdresser near me" or "car mechanic in town", they see a map with several businesses at the top of the results. This is the so-called local pack - and for many service businesses the most valuable spot in the whole search engine. We explain how local SEO works and what to do to rank higher in Google Maps.

What does your position in Google Maps depend on?

Google describes three main factors: relevance (whether the profile matches the query), distance (how close the searcher is) and prominence (how well known the business is, also based on reviews and its presence online). You cannot influence distance, but you can influence the other two. You will find the details in Google's help pages.

1. A complete Google Business Profile

The basis is your Google Business Profile. Fill it in completely:

  • the correct name, address, phone number and website
  • an accurate primary category and additional categories
  • opening hours, including holiday hours
  • a business description with your key services
  • services or products with descriptions
  • photos of your premises, team and work

2. Customer reviews

The number, quality and freshness of reviews matter a lot. Ask happy customers for a review - ideally right after the service - and reply to every one, including critical ones. It shows that the business is active and cares about its customers.

3. Consistent details across the web

Your name, address and phone number should be written the same way everywhere: on the website, in your Google profile, in business directories and on social media. Inconsistencies make it harder for Google to connect the information with your business.

4. A website matched to local searches

Your Maps profile relies heavily on what is on your website:

  • service pages with the name of the city or region you operate in
  • your address and a map on the contact page
  • structured data describing the business (e.g. LocalBusiness)
  • fast performance on mobile, because most local searches happen on phones

5. Regular activity

Posts on your profile, new photos, up-to-date hours, answers to questions - all signal that the business is active. A profile filled in once and left for years gradually loses importance.

6. Local mentions and links

Articles in local media, partnerships with other local businesses, sponsoring local events - all of this builds prominence, which translates into your position in Maps.

Local SEO and advertising

If you want to appear at the top straight away, you can combine organic work with Google Maps ads as part of Google Ads campaigns. Ads give a quick effect, while local SEO builds lasting visibility.

How can we help?

As part of our SEO service we take care of both the website and the business profile: content optimisation, structured data, consistent listings and a plan for collecting reviews. If the website needs rebuilding for local services, we will do it as part of a website project.

Frequently asked questions

Can I rank high in Maps without a website?

In theory yes, but a good website clearly helps - Google better understands what you do and where you operate.

How long does it take to improve my Maps position?

The first changes can be visible after a few weeks, and a stable position is the result of regular work over the following months.

Does buying reviews help?

No. It breaks Google's rules and can lead to reviews being removed or the profile being suspended. What counts are real reviews from real customers.
